IB-583 is a NBDP (Narrow Band Direct Printing) Terminal Unit, optionally available for SSB radiotelephone. NBDP terminal unit is required for [NBDP-ARQ] and [NBDP-FEC]. The terminal unit consists of a LCD with a floppy disk drive. It can be used for telex communication where all information is displayed on screen. The display can provide information in Russian or English.

The IB-583 Furuno message terminal unit can be used to control radio equipment through channel scanning. In the Forward Error Correction mode, a number of channels are scanned by the terminal, this number can be controlled by user, it stops scanning whenever the radio finds an asynchronous channel. In the Automatic Repeat Request mode it stops when the user’s ID code is detected in an incoming signal, in this mode, the transmitter gets tuned to the corresponding transmitter frequency, this way, communication link is established and the traffic is automatically exchanged. The scanning resumes once the link is disconnected.
